August Artist's Cafe

We had wonderful weather, and quite a gathering. What is nice is the whole impromptu impact of the Artists Cafe, I had numerous children come up and were interested in the art and I gave them some paper and lent them some pastels and they were away.
What Charlie was doing caused a lot of interest, he had lots of paper stuck to the concrete at the side of the cafe, and with a mixture of paint and bubble liquid blew bubbles that landed on the paper and left a mark, he said he was more interested in the bubbles that didn't land on the paper - where did they go?
There was me, Neil, Charlie and son, Nick, Jim, Sheila with her two daughters and grandchildren Angel, Ash and Aaliyah. We were joined briefly by Simon, maybe he'll stay longer next time.
A lovely afternoon full of conversation!

The Fourth Artists Meeting

Well the weather was fine, so we sat outside. There was Lisa, Nick, Charlie and his son Luke, me and Lisa's friend. We all had a good chat and got on with some art. Luke who is four going on five was very helpful, he was assisting Charlie with his picture so that the canvas got covered with crayoning, Charlie was very patient.
We realised that Johnathon (6) had joined us when he asked to borrow our pencil sharpener.
Johnathon had been very busy doing lots of art with brightly coloured pencils, this is one of his pictures which is a car on a bright and sunny day.
I have got his picture in the 'Northlands Park Children's Gallery' http://www.childrensgallery.blogspot.com/
It was nice to see his mum and dad joining in too!

A bit about Sylak - Artists Café

I became involved when I initially approached Lisa with a whole bunch of ideas on how I envisaged art could be positively represented within the community where I lived; the most appealing of which, as it turns out, was the notion of holding a regular Artist’s Café – a place where artistically minded individuals could unite regularly, under relaxed surroundings, and fulfil their needs to express themselves creatively.
With the wholehearted cooperation of the Northlands Park Cafe, we began holding monthly Cafés ever since April 2007 and have never looked back!
As a result, I produced a set of tongue-in-cheek posters - inspired by my childhood memories of Montmartre and La Place du Tertre which we use to promote our monthly get-togethers.
I’ve had an interesting career – creatively. For many years I ran Maskerade a team that worked together putting on theatrical venues at major nightclub events in the capital - at the height of the Rave craze back in the early 90s.
Later I changed direction towards film and television and moved into the world of special effects forming Dark Futures – which focused mainly on the horror and gothic scenes. In 2000 following mounting success our company was incorporated and was renamed Sylak Special Effects Limited.
At roughly the same time I became a father for the first time, and found myself gradually taking on fewer large scale contracts as a result of mounting home responsibilities.
In recent years I have studied: stained glass – as a hobby; and taken up pottery, as well as working with other natural materials to produce sculptures.
I am currently writing fiction – and will be submitting my first work for publication in July.

May's Artist's Meeting

The Meeting.....

This was a very enjoyable meeting and a lot was achieved as regards the community art too. I now have my face painter - Lisa.
Lisa and Fran are to be judges for the portrait competition, Lisa and Fran both have degrees so they are exceptionally qualified for the positions.
A couple of people didn't turn up as they thought it was on next Sunday not this Sunday but we had a nice amount of people. There was Sylak and his Mum, Lisa and Fran, Nick and myself.
After quite a long chat and coffee we all ventured out to the park looking for inspiration to paint or draw.

Artists Meeting at Northlands Park Café

We are meeting on the first Sunday of the month at noon at the Northlands Park Cafe.Artists are very welcome, if you'd like to bring some of your art that would be great, it would be nice to see what each of us are up to. If you don't think of yourself officially as an artist but want to give art a try please turn up.At our last meeting we all got on with our own art after quite a chat, we got joined by a few of the local kids who were welcome to use the paper and pens we used. We're not officially saying that we are doing this but all our welcome to join in, we're not turning anyone away.By the way we are definitely meeting now on the first Sunday, not the second as I first advertised, we decided it's easier to remember.Sylak is trying to organise getting us some easels so that we won't have to work on the floor!

The First Artists Meeting

I thought this went really well, Sylak, Nick, Alison, Charlie, Sarah and Tim turned up. Then we were joined by Richard and Bradley and their two other chums. We had a bit of a chat for about half an hour then we took ourselves out to the side of the cafe and Charlie and mates, and Sylak got to work on their art. I couldn't make my mind up what to do this morning so just brought a camera with the intention of capturing the swan and nest on film. Richard and his mates got down to doing their art work too, we got quite a lot of attention from passers by. We were later joined by Sylak's friend Chris and finally after much verbal exchange and creative endeavours we ventured back into the Café.

Sylaks Poster

Sylak is doing his own version of this poster to make our own poster advertising that we are inviting artists to meet at the art cafe every 1st Sunday at noon. Apparently lots of people are interested.
We discussed that it would be good to show each other our art and get talking forming ideas to what sort of things we could do as a 'bohemian art group.' Bless his enthusiasm.

Sylak has lots of ideas for a bohemian society - even if it's one that meets at the cafe once a month. I'm glad I've got an enthusiastic resident. * Sylaks dreams:I envisage the Café as a relaxed atmosphere for spiritual fulfillment / rather than financial gain. (on further conversations about the artists Café).
